The Box Office phenomenon ‘The Hunger Games’ easily defeated both myth and magic over the weekend.
Katniss Everdeen just always gets the job done. Her and her fellow Tributes managed to pull in $251M in just ten days!! Making ‘The Hunger Games’ the fourth fastest movie to ever hit the quarter of a billion dollar mark! But, the three films in front of it are all sequels (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and The Dark Knight), which makes ‘THG’ the fastest non-sequel to gross that much money!
In the second position was ‘Wrath of the Titans’, a sequel based on a mediocre remake and that evidently interested very few moviegoers. Despite the wildly improved CGI and 3D effects it just wasn’t enough to get people attracted to this flick. Not even Sam Worthington’s fancy new ‘time-period appropriate’ hair-do could heal the pain caused by his ‘Clash of the Titans’. The poor showing may also have something to do with the fact everyone saw basically the same story in ‘The Immortals’ a few months ago!
But, if you want to dump $150M bucks into a sequel for a movie that no one liked, starring an actor who can’t act and is nothing but Box Office poison lately, don’t be shocked when you only make $34.2M in your opening weekend. Just saying.
Also coming as no surprise to the SurlyGurls, or anyone else, ‘Mirror Mirror’ opened with some pretty lack-lustre numbers too. The Snow White comedy starring Julia Roberts secured the third position; hunting down about $19M. Really the only silver lining here is that the studio was able to throw ‘Mirror Mirror’ into the theatres before ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’.
Finally, in the limited release world of cinema, ‘Bully’ made its big five-theatre debut earning $115,000. For all those “mental math” haters, that’s an average of $23,000/theatre, a pretty solid haul. Considering all the pre-release buzz this un-rated film received, along with the strong reviews and emotional reactions over the weekend, we’ll all be hearing more about this flick.
Here is the estimated breakdown of the weekend totals:
